Hazing Has No Place on Campus
Until last year, when state Rep. Adam Hasner, R-Delray Beach, led the effort that resulted in Florida’s antihazing law, hazing was treated as something of a “boys will be boys” problem that could be handled with disciplinary actions such as expelling the abusers or banning the fraternity from campus for a number of years. »Read More

Hasner is proud of the fact that he’s been interested in and promoting alternative energy “before it was cool.” He pointed to the 2006 Florida Energy Act - a bill for which he was the prime House sponsor. That bill contained numerous consumer and corporate incentives for alternative energy technologies such as solar and hydrogen fuel cells, said Hasner, adding: “The legislation helps to promote the production and distribution of renewable energy from Florida grown crops, agricultural wastes and residues, and other biomass that will help to expand agribusiness in Florida.” But that’s not enough, said Hasner. That was merely “a good start.” »Read More

Florida Law on Hazing Gets Test
At least 43 other states have antihazing statutes, but few are as stiff as Florida’s. State Rep. Adam Hasner, R-Delray Beach, pushed the legislation following the hazing death of a University of Miami student in 2001. “With this law, it’s no longer, ‘Don’t do it because it isn’t right,’ ” Hasner said. “It’s, ‘Don’t do it because it’s illegal.’ By making this a crime and by making the penalties tougher, that message will get through.” »Read More
