Adam Hasner was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2002 and is currently serving his fourth term representing the people of District 87. Spanning the coastal communities of southern Palm Beach County and northern Broward County including the cities of Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach, Hasner represents a vibrant and dynamic region in South Florida.
Representative Hasner also serves as the Majority Leader of the Florida House of Representatives, and is responsible for assisting the 76 Republican members achieve individual success as well as advance the legislative agenda of his majority party. He is also the voice of the House Republican majority to the media and grass roots activists.
The first legislator of either political party from Palm Beach County to serve in this leadership position in over 50 years, Representative Hasner was first drawn to public service serving as a page in the Florida Senate while in high school for State Senator Harry Johnston. During college, Hasner worked in the Washington, D.C. office of U.S. Congressman Tom Lewis as an L.B.J. Congressional Intern, and in law school he served as a Speaker’s Fellow in the Florida House of Representatives Agriculture and Consumer Services Committee, as well as an intern to Senate Majority Leader William “Doc” Meyers.
As a leading voice in the Legislature on key issues, Representative Hasner has been recognized as one of the strongest advocates to position Florida as a sustainable powerhouse for the 21st century. Focusing on economic transformation, an affordable and responsible tax structure and appropriate levels of government spending rather than maintaining the status quo, Hasner has earned a reputation as a passionate and tireless fighter for Florida’s taxpayers.
An early supporter of the “65% Solution” to increase classroom funding and reduce administrative overhead and wasteful bureaucracy, Representative Hasner has consistently fought for meaningful reforms to improve our schools. He has been an activist for improved student achievement through increased accountability standards, measuring results, performance pay for quality teachers, school choice to empower parents and technological innovations to best prepare students for the challenges of the global economy.
Since before it was in vogue, Representative Hasner has been a leader on renewable energy technologies including electric and hybrid vehicles, alternative fuels, solar power and ocean currents to reduce Florida’s dependence on foreign sources of energy, create jobs and help protect the environment. In 2003, he passed legislation providing consumer incentives for driving hybrid cars. In 2006, Hasner passed a comprehensive energy package providing incentives and grant funding for solar energy, ethanol and biofuels, waste-to-energy initiatives, green building technologies, as well as an innovative project to harness the Gulf Stream as a renewable power source. While supporting efforts to produce more domestic sources of energy through new exploration, Hasner was also the prime sponsor of Florida’s law to advance development of safe reliable nuclear power plants through responsible streamlining of state regulatory processes.
In 2008, after driving an all-electric vehicle for several months, Hasner has become a powerful voice for promoting battery powered “zero gas, zero emissions” transportation alternatives. In 2009, Hasner sponsored innovative legislation that would have provided state tax incentives for purchasing electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid conversions, as well as for constructing electric charging infrastructure. Leading by example, Representative Hasner and his wife, Jillian, have owned hybrid vehicles for the past four years.
Representative Hasner has also been a champion for innovative biomedical research having secured $120 million in state funding for cancer and Alzheimer’s research and treatment that will help to find cures while improving the quality of care available to the millions of Floridians. He was on the front lines with then Gov. Jeb Bush in helping to establish the life sciences industry in Florida through the creation of the Florida campus of the Scripps Research Institute in Palm Beach County. Hasner was also instrumental in securing the funding for a unique public/private partnership between the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Florida Atlantic University that established a four year medical school program to increase access to medical education at the Boca Raton campus.
Currently on the legislative front, Hasner continues to champion an effort for a state constitutional amendment that will guarantee workers the right to a secret ballot in union organizing elections which is now under attack from the “card-check” legislation being considered in Congress. Included among his other legislative accomplishments, Representative Hasner has secured critical funding for Everglades Restoration, and sponsored landmark legislation protecting Florida’s coastal waters and reefs by prohibiting the discharge of sewage and treated wastewater from ocean outfalls. He has also sponsored tough laws to protect consumers from deceptive trade practices in the credit counseling industry, and new laws to provide law enforcement officials with innovative tools to crack down on the growing gang threat in our communities. Hasner was also the author and sponsor of the nation’s toughest anti-hazing law to keep Florida’s students safe against this dangerous epidemic plaguing our schools, universities and social organizations.
In 2007, Hasner was the lead Republican sponsor of the Protecting Florida’s Investments Act to make Florida the first state in the nation to pass a law mandating that the state pension board divest all state employee retirement fund investments from companies that do business with Iran. In addition to sponsoring the Iran Divestment legislation, Representative Hasner has been the leader in Tallahassee on issues important to the Florida-Israel relationship. His first official legislative action in March 2003 was House Resolution 9021 expressing Florida’s solidarity with the State of Israel in her fight against terrorism that passed unanimously. In 2006, he helped officially re-establish the Florida Israel Institute to help promote and enhance economic, educational and cultural ties between Florida and Israel. He also sponsored legislation that now prohibits life insurance companies doing business in Florida from denying or restricting coverage to individuals who travel to Israel. In January 2009, Representative Hasner sponsored a resolution that passed unanimously making Florida the first state in the country to officially express support for Israel’s right to self defense against terrorism from the Gaza strip. During the last two presidential campaigns he served as Florida Jewish Outreach Chairman for President Bush in 2004 and for Senator John McCain in 2008.
In May 2007, Representative Hasner was part of the delegation that joined Governor Charlie Crist and Florida business leaders on an official trade mission to Israel to promote enhanced economic ties, investment and research collaboration. In 2005, Hasner was a participant in the American Swiss Foundation Young Leaders Conference, a ten day conference held throughout Switzerland to create meaningful dialogue and foster mutual understanding among the next generation of American and Swiss leaders. In 2009, Hasner traveled with other civic leaders from around the country to visit Poland as part of a Jewish heritage tour hosted by the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture that examines important cultural history as well as current trends in Poland.
In recognition of his outstanding commitment to economic development and business related issues, Representative Hasner has twice been named Champion of Business by the Associated Industries of Florida in 2006 and 2009. For his voting record on issues important to Florida’s small business community he has been consistently recognized with honors by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and the Florida Chamber of Commerce - including a 100% rating from both organizations for the 2009 legislative session. Among his other recognitions, Hasner was also named Everglades Trust Legislator of the Year in 2009 for his ongoing commitment to supporting the restoration of Florida’s River of Grass. Additionally, he was the American Cancer Society State Legislator of the Year for two consecutive years in 2005 and 2006 for his work to advance the cause of cancer research and treatment. In 2007, for his efforts on behalf of higher education at Florida Atlantic University he was the recipient of the prestigious President’s Talon Award.
Professionally, Representative Hasner is the President of HATMADA, Inc. a strategic advisory firm and he works independently as a mergers and acquisitions specialist providing legal, business development and strategic counsel. From 1995 to 1997, Hasner was the Palm Beach Regional Marketing Manager for Physician Corporation of America, a national managed care company. From 1997 to 1999 he was the Director of Business Development and Acquisitions for Columbia/HCA Physician Services Florida Division where he specialized in physician practice acquisitions. Hasner graduated in 1991 from the University of Maryland at College Park with a B.A. in Government and Politics and received his law degree from The Florida State University College of Law in 1995.
In addition to his legislative service, Representative Hasner currently serves on the board of directors of several community and statewide organizations including the Boca Raton Community Hospital, the Florida Research Consortium, Reach Out and Read, and the Florida-Israel Institute.
Several of his recent articles and speeches on topics such as 21st Century governance, re-energizing the Republican Party, America’s Relationship with Israel, and the future of electric vehicles have been published by groups such as Townhall.com, AmericanThinker.com, Center for U.S. Global Engagement, GOPAC and the National Electric Auto Association.
