TALLAHASSEE — Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill McCollum continued to make wedge-issues out of national policy debates Wednesday, using an appearance at a Florida Chamber of Commerce summit at Disney World to put Democrat Alex Sink on the spot over union ‘card-checking.’
Sink’s political advantage is premised on being a politician who understands the business side of things. But unions are, of course, a prime source of financial support for Sink and Democrats, so she’s not likely to take the bait.
Here’s the gist of his speech:
“We must do everything possible to create a business-friendly environment in Florida by holding the line on taxes, cutting burdensome regulations and making sure we have meaningful litigation reform.
“The unions are once again pushing their ‘card check’ agenda to allow small businesses to become unionized by the mere collection of employees’ signatures. It would do away with the most basic of democracy’s principles – the right to a secret ballot.
“This would adversely impact businesses at a time when we are struggling to generate jobs. The last thing we need right now is to place additional burden on small businesses. I fully support the Save Our Secret Ballot amendment being spearheaded by House Majority Leader Adam Hasner and Senator Garrett Richter which will ensure these basic rights are protected.
“And since, Alex Sink, my leading Democrat opponent in the Governor’s race is supported by a number of unions, I think our state’s business leaders deserve to know where she stands on this issue. To date, she has remained silent and ducked questions on another union-endorsed proposal—the public option for health care insurance. Why is she hiding on the tough issues? Floridians deserve answers not silence.”
