Republicans Hold on to Florida Legislature

Wednesday, November 5, 2008
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

President-elect Barack Obama’s historic win and Democratic gains across the country failed to change the balance of power in the Florida Legislature, according to unofficial election results late Tuesday.

Republicans have kept control of the Legislature since 1996. Going into Tuesday’s election, Republicans held a 75-43 majority in the House and a 26-14 advantage in the Senate.

House 87

As of 11:35 p.m., Adam Hasner with 58.2 percent led Robert Ostrov with 41.8 percent.

In a battle between a popular incumbent and a relatively unknown newcomer, state Rep. Adam Hasner, R-Delray Beach, appeared headed to victory late Tuesday over Robert Ostrov, a former assistant district attorney in the New York City area.

Hasner focused on issues such as developing clean and alternative sources of energy, additional property tax reform, education, economic development in the state.
